To improve teaching and learning for all students, teachers and teacher-leaders must become effective consumers of many types of data. MSU K-12’s data team offers training on the fundamentals of identifying and using appropriate data to help teachers understand and respond to student needs.

Research has shown that strong, effective leadership is critical to school turnaround and closing achievement gaps. The Office of K-12 Outreach provides training and leadership experiences that prepare current and potential educational leaders to address the complex problems facing schools today. We work with principals and leadership teams to tailor our services to their specific schools.

In this innovative program MSU K-12 Outreach staff work with principals and their leadership teams throughout the school year to guide and assist them as they grow into a collaborative, effective team that has the tools and confidence to improve teaching and learning in their schools. Principals are able to hone their leadership skills through the mentoring provided throughout the Fellowship program.

To improve teaching and learning for all students, schools and districts must become effective consumers of many types of data. MSU K-12’s data team can assist schools to collect, analyze, and evaluate data to enrich and inform practice using customized measurement tools and templates. The data team also builds teacher capacity to use data to drive instruction and evaluate individual student needs.

This unique program provides potential school principals an opportunity to explore the knowledge, skills and mindsets required to be a successful leader in today’s complex educational environments. Successful retired and sitting superintendents and principals, plus MSU College of Education staff, conduct a variety of workshops throughout the 2 ½ day program on the various aspects of the principalship. Includes resume review and mock interviews.

New principals often receive little or no support as they work to improve teaching and learning in their schools. MSU K-12 Outreach provides leadership coaching for principals that will guide them in creating a culture of caring and rigor in their school by:

  • building relational trust with staff, students, parents and the community;
  • creating a strong, effective leadership team;
  • developing a student-centered, data-driven approach to instruction;
  • fostering a professional community of teachers who are dedicated to continuous improvement.

MSU K-12 Outreach offers support that is customized to your school’s needs. This includes providing data, support and guidance as schools determine which students aren’t achieving and why, then works with school leaders to design strategies to meet their needs. MSU also provides training and resources for improving cultural proficiency and developing high expectations for all students.

A school district plays a significant role in school success by providing the systems, resources, training and support schools and school personnel need to teach all students successfully. The Office of K-12 Outreach offers a variety of district supports, from superintendent support to data training for central office staff, all customized to your district’s needs.
